The John Steinbeck Award

Bob Woodruff

In Once There Was a War, John Steinbeck frets that after sending troops to fight overseas, we'll neglect them when they return home. Sixty years later, that concern was echoed by Bob Woodruff. A famed war correspondent—like Steinbeck—and a renowned reporter for ABC's World News Tonight, Woodruff deems the Bob Woodruff Foundation his most worthwhile endeavor. Merely a decade old, the foundation already has raised $40 million in support of recent U.S. military veterans. On February 21, 2017, Woodruff appeared at the Student Union Theater as a fund-raiser for the SJSU Veterans Resource Center. In a talk with Dan Ashley, anchor of ABC7 News, Woodruff said, "To get an award in Steinbeck's name, in his honor, is the greatest gift I've ever gotten."
